Lights: First Shoot
IMG_0151 [50%]

I finally tested out the light set I got for Christmas today. I'm terribly impressed.

I've been readin Light it, Shoot it, Retouch it nd I set the lights up just like they said in the book. I also set my camera to the exact settings used in the book, which I rarely ever even change in truth. While the shoot was definitely brighter and a more natural brightness, unlike the yellowing I so often got without them, there was so much fuzz to the pictures and there shouldn't be.

I know I'll need to keep practicing with this and eventually play with the editing side to "fix" the pictures, but I think that no matter what I learn, I will always prefer the no flash, natural daylight pictures I'm used to taking. The clarity is incomparable to this.

In other news, I freshened up the red in my hair. Can you believe how long it is now!?

Thanks! I was so nervous when I first did it, but now I'm sort of addicted to it. :)

Pretty! Love the blend of different colors! :)

I want to try something similar only with violet highlights. Maybe some time this year I'll have the guts to try it (that is if my mom doesn't keep telling me things that hold me back, ugh).

Thanks, Cris!

I know all about parents and their commentary where hair is concerned. I was born a brunette (like my father, but he's been gray since 30 so I think he forgets), but my sister and mom are white blond. He prefers blonds and for years I kept my hair blond too because of his remarks. Eventually though, I stopped caring and boldly went dark again. I haven't turned back since. Every time he says something about it now, I swiftly remind him that God made me this way and if he has a problem with it to take it up with Him. I think for the most part he's gotten used to the change, but when I did this red it upped the shock factor. In church this weekend, before this shoot, he said, "Your hair is getting a little wild, Sarah." And I said, "It's only the beginning." I think this summer I may try a variety of colors, maybe a peacock color pallet on the bottom - go full mermaid. I can't wait to see his face then. Ha!

Anyway, the point of that story was -- DO it! Violet would look so pretty and it's not like it's forever. If you hate it, it will only be a few weeks before it's faded out. But don't let your mom guilt you out of it. :D

Sorry you weren't too pleased with the lighting effects! But hey, who knows--the more you fiddle with it, the more you can figure out the quirks and make it do spectacular things! And if not, awesome too, since you totally know how to own that natural light in your pictures! ;)

Loving your hair, btw! It reminds me a bit of my sister's. She's blond, but dyes it in a similar way, with a black shade instead of red. (In the past, she'd do funky colors like pink, but she's not allowed to do that anymore, because of work.) Anyway, really pretty, Sarah! I can never fathom having patience for hair that long. Chin-length is the most I can handle, haha!

I'm testing out the lights again this week with Gideon. We're going to do new Sock Monkey shots (since we did them at this time last year) so we can compare the two. Rachel crocheted him this Sock Monkey hat that is just adorable. So, hopefully they'll be better with me behind the camera rather than in front of it. I'll be posting the results.

And thanks about the hair! Sometimes it's length gets on my nerves (like today, it's in a ponytail), but for the most part I love having long hair. And I'm in love with this coloring (I think it's proper name is ombre?) That's so cool your sisters is like this too with different colors. I'm considering going really funky this summer... if I'm brave enough. Ha!

Aw, another Sock Monkey photo shoot? That outta be cute! :)

Long hair looks great on others, but on me...well..trying to manage it has always made me psychotic, hence me always cutting it short. I'd probably sport an even shorter 'do than I already have if I thought I could pull it off, haha. That'd be really cool if you did even funkier colors this summer! Embrace the bravery! ;)
